Frequently Asked Questions from Clients in Nisku

J A S Vacuum Truck Services has encountered many similar situations and inquiries after serving clients throughout the Nisku area for over 23 years. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding commercial and residential septic tanks and pumps.

Q: How often should I maintain my septic system by cleaning it?

A: A cleaning should typically take place every 2 years (based on 4 people living in the household). It depends on how many people are living in the household.

Q: How long do pumps last?

A: A good quality pump should last you 8-12 years.

Q: How long does a septic tank last?

A: 15 - 25 years, depending on the type of water you have. Well water has a high sodium content and/or high iron content, which can cause the septic tank to deteriorate faster. Soft water is also harder on a septic tank due to the high sodium content. Septic tanks are typically made out of concrete but if it is made out of fibreglass, then it isn't affected by high sodium in water. However, when you put in a fibreglass tank the installation must be done properly so the tank doesn't collapse.

Q: My toilet won't flush and it’s coming into the basement into the drain. What is causing this?

A: The line from the house to the septic tank may be plugged. You would need a snake to unplug it. There is also the possibility that the pump or the float (which activates the pump) is not working. The field that the grey water pumps into may be frozen.

Q: If my pipes freeze during the winter, can I thaw them myself?

A: Yes. You can run a hair dryer over the affected frozen pipe inside the septic tank to thaw it.
